For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ ~~ Matthew 25:35-40 NIV
Promoting Food Security
As followers of Jesus, we are committed to serving him through serving our neighbors in need. We are particularly committed to addressing the problem of food insecurity. Each month, we collect food items for two area food banks: Hempfield Area Food Pantry and the Columbia Food Bank.
On a regular basis, members of our congregation make deliveries of food supplies on behalf of the Lancaster County Food Hub. And, on the first Sunday of each month, we take a special offering for Global Food Initiative, a Church of the Brethren effort to alleviate world hunger.
Closer to home, we volunteer as a weekly distribution center for Power Packs, a unique Lancaster County program that partners with area schools to provide food, but also recipes and food planning and preparation lessons to help stretch meal dollars and eliminate food insecurity.
Safe Housing
We support the mission of Brethren Housing Association to provide stable housing for mothers and children in transition by cleaning the homes and outfitting them with furniture, home goods, clothing, and a stocked pantry. In the past 3 years, we have sponsored homes for 5 families in need.
All are welcome to share of their time, money, or food in service to our neighbors.
